At night, Ellen Hisme goes to school as normal, and her substitute teacher is there, as normal. But by day, her substitute teacher isn't supposed to have been there for years. Ellen doesn't question this, of course, because that's how it's always been. But as her classmates are disappearing faster and faster, and night clashes with day, maybe her sub isn't as ordinary as she wanted to believe.
